More Exploring

Saturday, May 28

Today was a busy, busy day.  Once we got up and got ready we headed out to the Base Exchange.  I wanted to check out a couple of things before we left the Academy.  I think I need to replace my camera so I am looking at what is out there.

We decided to head to the furthest place first, then work our way back in.  First stop is a tourist attraction called Seven Falls.  It is a series of seven waterfalls that all kinda run together.  Here is a picture of the falls with arrows pointing at each one.

You can either climb over 300 steps or take an elevator.  Guess which one we did?!?  There was also a performance by Indian dancers.

Bill enjoyed watching the fish in the stream at the bottom of the falls.  He was looking for his fishing pole!

Also, you can to the grave site of Helen Hunt Jackson.  Who is she?  She wrote the book Ramona, which is also a play put on every year in the city of Hemet, CA, where we spend the winter.  It is such a small world.  Everything here was interesting but since it is a privately held attraction they charge a lot for the privilege of visiting.  But what do I expect from tourist traps?

Our second stop was actually a drive through the Garden of the Gods.  It is a National Natural Landmark and is free to drive and hike through.  Since this is a holiday weekend it was really crowded.  And lots of them don't know how to drive!  Anyway, it is mostly red rocks in interesting shapes.

Our last attraction was the Manitou Cliff Dwellings.  They are one of the most accessible examples of cliff dwelling architecture.  The Anasazi lived in the Four Corners area from 1100 AD to 1300 AD.  There is a self guided tour of the dwelling, a museum and gift shop.

The above stones were used to grind grain.  My father has a collection of stones like these that he found at work in San Juan Capistrano, CA.

This is another privately owned attraction that charges way too much to visit them.  Oh well, we haven't spent money on that type of thing in awhile.

After visiting the dwellings we headed back into Colorado Springs.  We stopped at Walmart to check out cameras and pick up a couple of little things.  Afterward we drove across the street to have dinner at Cracker Barrel.  We haven't eaten at one of these in a long time and it is one of Bill's favorite restaurants.  The food was good, as always and I was able to get out without buying anything from the store.  It was hard, but I made it.

That was our day.  Tomorrow we will be cleaning the rig and doing laundry so we won't be doing any exploring.  Enjoy the pictures.  Remember, you can double click on them to get to larger versions of the pictures.
