The Henry Ford

Saturday, Aug 11, 2012

Up and around early, we headed out to visit the Henry Ford Museum.  Today reminded us why we don't usually visit tourist places on the weekend.  When Bill and I were here last time we walked right up to the ticket booth so we didn't even think about it this time.  That was a big mistake.  We had to wait at least 20 minutes to buy our tickets.  We plan on coming back Monday to take the Ford Factory Tour so we were able to buy those tickets at a discount by buying them with the museum tickets.

The museum has some different exhibits from last year and some that are the same.  I spent most of my time in the new exhibits.  It is mainly setup to show America's love affair with the car.  The exhibit is called Driving America.  Here are a few of the cars they had on exhibit.

A DeSoto
 A T-bird

 An Edsel

A GTO

There was also a section on roadtrips across America.

A VW bus

Charles Kuralt's motorhome he reported from

An old trailer

There was even a copy of a Holiday Inn room and an old McDonald's sign.

I will put the slide show from last years blog to show all the other stuff in the museum.  Terry and Lydia really enjoyed the time we spent in the Henry Ford.

After we left the museum we drove around a bit and located Ford's house. but it is closed on the weekends.  We will try to stop in on Monday, when we come back in for the factory tour.  Bill and I had a hot dog at the Oscar Meyer wiener cafe but Terry and Lydia needed something for lunch so we located an A & W.  We had drinks while they had sandwiches.

Before we left Detroit Terry wanted to go downtown.  It is really depressing to drive through parts of town.  The buildings are deserted and falling down.  The economy has really hit this town.

We did find the stadium the Detroit Tigers play baseball in.  It is a really impressive stadium and you can really tell the team mascot is the tiger -

Next door is the stadium their football team, the Lions, play in.  It is called Ford Field, what else?

Now all they need is a team called the bears.  Get it?  Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!

We drove home and relaxed a bit before dinner, which Lydia fixed.  The skies are still overcast and we have been waiting for rain all day but it never really came.

Here are all the pictures I took today -

Here are the pictures I took last year when we visited the museum.  You can read all about that if you look for the blog for Aug 30, 2011.
