Canyon De Chelly North Rim

June 8, 2013 Saturday

We were up bright and early, mainly because the people in the 5th wheel across from us started up their diesel truck at 6:30 AM and left it idling for awhile before they hitched up their trailer.  My bedroom window was open to let in the cool night air.  So we got up and got ready.  When I needed my hair dryer we turned on the generator and then we could also make tea.  We cleaned up and packed up most everything so that when we returned all we would have to do is bring in 2 slides and hook up the tow car.

Our trip this morning took us to the north rim of the Canyon De Chelly.  This portion of the canyon is not as traveled as the south rim.  There are only three overlooks but I think there were more ruins to see.  There were also some rock drawings.

Fortress Rock - The Navajo had put wood in places on the rock so that if they were attacked they could climb up for protection.

The place of the running antelope -

Called that because of these drawings -

House under the Rock -

The Place Where Two People Fell - The story here is that some Navajo women, children and old men were hiding here from attacking Mexican soldiers.  One woman grabbed one of the soldiers and they both fell to their deaths.

After visiting the overlooks we returned to the rig and took off.  It was about 10:00 or 11:00 depending on your clock.  I was always confused as to the time and my phone kept changing time depending on where it was getting the signal from.

On the road we saw some interesting rock formations -

The drive wasn't bad but there were places where they road was rough.  We finally arrived at our destination for the next 4 nights.  We are at the Blue Mountain RV Park in Blanding, Utah.  We are going to use this as a base to see Four Corners, Monument Valley, Valley of the Gods, and Natural Bridges.

After resting for a bit we went into town to have dinner.  Blanding is not a big city and there are not a lot of choices for dinner.  Based on a recommendation from the campground owners we chose The Homestead Steakhouse.  The food was good but the service a little slow.  They only had one waitress and all 12 tables were full.  Normally Bill won't put up with slow service but he adapted and we had a nice meal.  The only other place in town is an Italian restaurant that recently opened in an old restaurant.  It gets mixed reviews on the internet.

We tried to get the car washed on the way home but the machine didn't work so that is a chore for another day.  We also stopped at the Family Dollar store to buy some playing cards and a fly swatter.  We christened it as soon as we got back and killed the fly that has been bugging us.

Here are all the pictures I took -

I hope you have a good day.

Clay would jokingly call it Canyon of Chili.
