Jasper National Park

Sept 6, 2013 Friday

Today was moving day. We are heading north about 193 miles. We got an early start as we had a couple of stops to make before hitting the campground. We can’t check in until after 2:00 PM so that shouldn’t be a problem. Just a bit past Lake Louise we merged onto CA93 – The Icefields Parkway, and came to an almost immediate stop. They were checking park passes for everyone and warning that there had been a mud slid about half way between there and Jasper. The estimate was for the road to reopen around 1:00. No problem, we weren’t in a big hurry.

This was a really pretty drive. We saw waterfalls, rivers, trees, but no animals. They kept warning about wildlife but we couldn’t find any. There were signs saying watch for elk, caribou, and mountain goats and we didn’t even see a chipmonk! We did cause some commotion when we pulled into some of the rest/parking areas! Many of the European visitors were very interested in our motorhome. They were asking us a lot of questions about driving and living in it. I know there were a number of pictures taken of it.

The Icefields Parkway has a huge number of glaciers along it. Here are a few pictures that I took.

We did stop at the Icefields Center so that we could ride the ice buggies out onto the glacier. It was really cool, and I don’t mean just the ride! It was cold on the ice. They say that at the current rate of global warming the glacier will disappear in less than 50 years.

We finally reached the campground around 5:00 PM. We are staying at the Jasper National Park Whistler Campground. We have a full hookup site but only 30 amp. They have 50 amp sites but those were already reserved when I booked our sites. It is a pull through but not real wide. There is good separation between sites. It is cool and cloudy but I hope it warms up in the next few days. We plan on taking a tram lift up the mountain one day.

After we got set up I fixed dinner. We had the last of my fresh corn, mac and cheese, and steak tenderloin. It was really good. We now have the steak to take for lunch one day, when we are visiting the area. We will be here until Tuesday and then start heading out of Canada. When we finished dinner we took a drive around the campground. There are over 700 sites in here. Not all have hookups. On our drive we saw a deer and a female elk. We also drove into Jasper to check out the town and check on fuel. I did fill up my car at $1.239 a liter. I think that works out to about $4.47 a gallon. Not too bad.

We don’t have satellite TV up here, too many trees so we are watching recorded stuff. There is one over the air channel but it doesn’t come in very good. Luckily I have a bunch of stuff on my Kindle to read.

So that is all for today. I hope you enjoy all the pictures I took of glaciers and ice.
