Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada

Sept 2, 2013 – Monday So we finally left Great Falls, MT, which doesn’t have any great falls. We did have to make a quick stop at Flying J to get propane so it was about 10:00 AM when we got on the road. The trip today is only supposed to be 184 miles but it sure took a long time. We also had to make a stop for fuel in Shelby, MT about 35 miles before crossing into Canada. We also stopped at a rest area just before the border for lunch. This was a quick stop. Oh yeah, then it was a stop of about 10 minutes at the border. We didn’t have any traffic to speak of so it was a steady drive.

We are in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada for the night. This is a Passport America park. It is $34.88 CAD. Wifi is not included and they do not have cable. I can’t pick up satellite here, a bunch of trees in the way, so it will be a quiet night. The park is nice. There is not much road noise and I haven’t heard any trains yet but the night is young. We are up front so we get to see everyone pulling in.

A bit after we got setup we decided to drive over to a National Historic Site, Fort Whoop-Up. I know, weird name. This is not the original fort, that was about 3 miles down the road and no longer exists. This is a reproduction. It was originally constructed in 19767 and changes made to make it more authentic in 1985. Fort Whoop-Up was originally called Fort Hamilton. It got its reputation and new name because of the whiskey trade and the fact that it was an American fort in Canada. It is said that this fort led to the creation of the RCMP.

After the fort we returned to the campground and I fixed a nice dinner of potato soup and cornbread muffins. It was a quiet evening since we have no TV and no internet. Tomorrow we head out to Canmore and Banff National Park.
