Many Glacier

Tuesday, July 20

Today we moved from the West side of Glacier park to the East side of the park. It was a ride of about 125 miles and it was all on two lane roads. We took the suggestion of the campground and went a little out of our way so that we avoided mountain roads. We are now parked at the St Mary KOA in St Mary, MT. We are only a couple of miles outside of the park entrance.

Once we got parked and setup I went ahead and fixed dinner. I made a take-off on chicken Marsala. I browned the chicken, cooked some onions and poured some Marsala sauce over the whole thing and let it reduce. I served some egg noodles and broccoli along with it. It was really good. We had dinner around 2:00 PM so that we could take a trip into the park. We didn't go to the Going-to-the-sun road, but instead went up the road a bit to the Many Glacier entrance. It isn't a long road but it is a beautiful drive. We really enjoyed the view as we drove down the road.

We stopped at the Many Glacier Hotel. It was built in 1915 and has been in use since. You can stay out here any time. We didn't check into the cost but I bet it isn't cheap!

There are mountain goats up on the mountain but you could only see them with really powerful binoculars. On our way back out we stopped at a trail that was suppose to be easy. It was only a mile long but nobody mentioned that it was one mile straight up! I made it about 2/3 of the way but the altitude and the steep climb were just too much for me. Only problem was that I couldn't wait for Bill to complete the climb and see the waterfall as there were about a million mosquitoes and they were all coming after me. I didn't spray any OFF! before we left. I certainly won't forget that again. I am one big bite now! Somewhere along the way the camera fell out of Bill's pocket and he didn't notice until we were about half-way back down. He had to turn around and go back while I went down to the car. I wanted to lock myself in so the bugs would leave me alone. Bill did comment that when I wasn't with him the bugs went after him! Oh, he did find the camera.

We saw some lovely flowers in the fields. We hadn't really seen that many on the west side of the park.

Tomorrow we will be hitting the Going-to-the-Sun road from the east. It isn't as long as the west side, being only 19 miles. If we have time we might take a side trip to Two medicine. The day after that we are heading to the International Peace Park, which is the Canadian northern part of the park. We have to remember to take our passports with us. Enjoy the slideshow.
