Visiting Great Falls

Sunday, July 25

Today was our day to explore Great Falls, MT. With a name like that I figured there had to be a waterfall somewhere in the area. But first we visited a museum of western art. CM Russell is a "local" boy who went on to fame. He was born in St Louis but always wanted to be a cowboy so he came to Montana just after his 16th birthday. He became a painter and sculpture of western art. He also had a large collection of western artifacts. We really enjoyed the museum.

There were also sculptures and paintings by other artists

The museum has a section that holds a rotating display. Today they had a display on Browning Rifles. Bill enjoyed that section.

Also on the grounds are the original house and studio Russell lived and worked in. The house doesn't hold all the original furniture but is a representation of what a home of that era would have been decorated as.

After we finished enjoying the museum we drove north toward the Missouri river. This is also part of the Lewis and Clark Trail. There are three different waterfalls along this portion of the river. One of them is currently not open to viewing because of problems with the banks being unstable. They don't want tourists being hurt or having the land give way under them!

Black Eagle Falls

Rainbow Falls

We also visited the Giant Springs and the Fish Hatchery. They are both located in a very nice park.

The temperature was creeping upward so we headed back to the rig and the air conditioner. After a nice afternoon nap I fixed a dinner, since I now had food, of smoked pork chops, baked potatoes and fresh broccoli. We are now going to relax for the evening. I hope you enjoy the post. Here is the slideshow of all the pictures.
