Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park

Thursday, July 22

Today we got up and got ready to head into Canada. While I was getting dressed the power went out. We are only running on 30 amps here. Bill went out and everything looked OK at the plug, nothing was tripped. Hmmm, hope it isn't the rig. Remember the power had been out sometime yesterday while we were gone. Our neighbor came out and mentioned that he had been plugged into the 20 amp spot last night and didn't have power this morning so he plugged into the second 30 amp. Hmm. We asked if he minded if we unplugged his pop-up and tried that plug. It worked fine. Hmmm. Bill went to the office and they will send an electrician in a bit. Turned out that the main plug tripped. It was located across the way from us. Anyway all is good now.

We gathered our passports, hats, money, water and camera and took off. It would be about a 30-45 minute drive to get to the park on the Canadian side. It was a nice drive without too much traffic. We had to wait a bit at the border crossing but not long. Once we were back on our way we headed toward the main gate of the park. In the US we have passes that let us into all National Parks for free. They don't work in Canada. We paid $13.60 Canadian to get in. We paid in US dollars and got change in Canadian dollars. Looks like I am going to have to buy something small to use that up!

Our first stop was the Prince of Wales Hotel. It was built between 1926-1927 as part of the railroad services. They wanted to increase their ridership through Montana. It is now a National Historic Site but you can still stay here. One thing we noticed was that at the Many Glacier Hotel the bellhops wore lederhosen and here they wear kilts!

The hotel is nice but I didn't take any inside pictures. We did walk out back and take a picture of the lake and the town of Waterton.

The town of Waterton is a quaint little place. They also have a lot of deer around town. They seem to be used to people but you wouldn't want to feed them or go close. We saw some fawns too.

We walked the main street and decided to stop for lunch. It was starting to drizzle so we thought it would be best to get inside for a bit. By the time we finished lunch the rain had stopped. We also walked up and down the street and checked out the stores. I couldn't find anything I wanted to spend my Canadian money on. Guess I will keep checking.

Next we drove on to the end of the road. Before we left town we stopped at Cameron Falls. We saw some cute chipmonks (I think) running around the grass.

We finally got to the end of the road and to Cameron Lake. You could rent boats and take a ride out on the lake. One of the boats was named Ashley, the same as Bill's granddaughter. I told him he could take Ashley out for a boat ride! Hee Hee.

We didn't stay very long as my stomach started bothering me. I guess lunch didn't settle very well. We decided to leave the park and head back to the campground. As we rounded one curve there was a bear in the middle of the road! Cool. I grabbed the camera but he moved too quickly and I didn't get a picture. Bummer. I did get a good picture of some "wildlife" on the road. We have seen a lot of this animal.

We stopped at the hotel again to pick up some Tums and I spent my Canadian money on that and a box of special blend tea. We got back to the rig and I took a long nap. I am feeling a little better but didn't want a big dinner so we had soup. It is now raining with some good lightening and thunder. The wind picked up a bit also. It looks like one of our neighbors lost their awning during the day. The wind around here blows without warning. We don't keep our awnings out when we are not home.

Well, that is all for today. I hope you enjoy the pictures and slideshow. Tomorrow we are leaving this beautiful area and heading down to Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls. We will be staying there for about 5 days to rest and restock our groceries. Bye for now.

I noticed the wildlife at the side of the road was wearing earrings! Very "in."
Not sure those little critters are chipmunks. I always ask locals when in question. Ahhhh! The fawns were adorable!! Most of the deer looked very young!
