This morning we got up and went to check out "The most awesome flea market in the world". Their quote, not mine. Maybe it is the most awesome flea market in the redneck world! I now know where some of those "Walmart people" live and shop! The most prominent items were knives, guns and truck parts. We didn't purchase anything but did have some ice cream. It was really hot and muggy, even in the morning.
We retired back to the rig and rested, getting ready for our evening. Tonight we drove into Louisville and the Kentucky State Fair. We are not really going to the fair but to a free concert being given by the Oak Ridge Boys! It actually cost us $16.00 as we had to pay to park and to get into the fair.
We left the campground around 5:00 PM and the show was at 8:00. We planned some extra time for parking and locating the arena. Parking was a minor problem, I think it took us about 15 minutes to get a decent parking space. I only had to go up and down a couple of rows. The fair does have rides, food, booths, and of course, animals. There is a big horse show during the two week run of the fair. We asked for directions to the arena and were told the gates would open at 6:30. We decided to walk around a bit and take in the sights and sounds. Turns out we didn't go in that direction but we did find the area with cows!
We hung around the hall for a bit as it was air conditioned. Eventually we had to go outside and stand in line to get in the show. We are used to the California crowds so it wasn't as bad as we thought. The first 6 rows were reserved for "special" people, you know, the ones who win tickets on the radio. We got seats in the 4th row of regular people. The stage was placed around home plate and we were just to the 3rd base side. If we were watching a baseball game they were fabulous seats. Pretty good for a concert too. The pictures look further away then they actually were. Bill didn't even have to wear his hearing aids!
First on stage was a bluegrass group called The Grascals. They were really good and the group contains some fabulous musicians. If fact, the banjo player is the IBMA banjo player of the year. They played a little less than an hour.
After an intermission the arena went dark and here they came! The Oak Ridge Boys! They are celebrating their 35th year performing at the Fair. Their first song was The Boys are Back, and yes they are! They performed for almost 2 hours. They performed a number of their old hits, some of their new stuff and some gospel. Did you know that the drummer is the son of William Golden? The drummers daughter, Bill's granddaughter, is a fiddle player and she performed during one song. Three generations on one stage. We loved it and sang along to everything we knew. They finished with Elvira and Bobby Sue. After that they had the Grascals come out and they sang Amazing Grace together with the audience.
We made it home around midnight. It was fun to see the show. Enjoy the pictures
