Mt Airy or Mayberry

Tuesday & Wednesday, Sept 7 & 8

Tuesday was mostly a travel day. We drove 174 miles to Mt Airy, NC. This is where Andy Griffin grew up. It is the town Mayberry is based on. They have built on this theme and have museums, old stores, and tours based on the TV show. We are staying at Mayberry Campground. All the streets in the campground are named after characters in the show. They also have some named after some Eng & Chang Bunker who were siamese twins who were born in the 1800's. They settled in this area after they came to the US. Many of their decendants still live here. Didn't you know they got married and had 21 children between them?

The campground doesn't have a laundry room, they are currently upgrading the one they have so we drove into town to find a laundromat. We did locate one and then drove around downtown Mt Airy. Most things were closed as it was after 5:00 PM.

On Wednesday morning we got up and it started sprinkling. We drove over and got the laundry done. We had planned to explore downtown today but when we finished the laundry it was raining steadily. We stopped by the grocery store and then headed back to the campground. We are hoping it will stop raining later today. Right now we are just relaxing in the rig.
