Touring Mt Airy

Thursday, Sept 9

The weather cleared up so today we are going to explore Mount Airy. Our first stop is just on the outskirts of town, the Andy Griffin Museum. This is a small museum that holds a lot of Andy and Mayberry items. No pictures are allowed so there aren't any. Also in this complete is a theatre when you can see live performance. There wasn't anything going on when we visited. Out in front is a neat statue. We actually walked right by it but stopped on our way out -

It is a very memorable statue. Too bad they don't have sound out there. You can just hear the whistling.

Afterward we drove down to Wally's gas station. This is where Goober and Gomer worked. They also have a setup of the town store fronts there, including the court house. The desk and other items in the courthouse are not the originals, those are in the museum.

We headed downtown to walk around and get lunch. Flyod's barbershop is there but it was closed today. We also saw one of the old police cars that they use for tours. There are a number of small restaurants downtown. We had lunch at Snappy Lunch. It is a small place with a limited menu. Their claim to fame is the pork chop sandwich, a breaded and fried pork chop with mayo, tomato, cole slaw, chili and I don't remember what else. I tried this and Bill had a BLT. The menu also included bologna sandwiches, hot dogs, a hamburger and one or two other items. The sandwiches are served wrapped in butcher paper, no sides. You can get potato chips, no fries. The idea of the restaurant was to serve sandwiches the working man could come in and get quickly. The service is fast and the food was enjoyable. After lunch we walked down the street some more and then stopped into the soda shop and we split a milk shake. All in all a nice little town.

Back in the campground we took a few more pictures. This place is joining Passport America so will be a great bargain in a couple of months. Tomorrow we head out and over to the Chapel Hill area for the night. We are headed to Avon, NC which is on the outer banks. I hope to get a picture of Pilot Mountain on our way out.
