I must really want to go to this restaurant. I actually set the alarm clock last night so I would get up early today. It was still dark when the alarm went off at 7:00 AM. We got up, got dressed, had breakfast and were on the road. We crossed the river into Savanna, found a parking spot (right up the street from the restaurant) and got in line. It was around 9:00 when we hit the line and it was around the block from the door. Luckily it moved quickly and we had our reservation at 11:00. We walked around town a bit and checked out the City Market. It was a group of stores and restaurants, not an open air market. We had to be back across from the restaurant at 10:45 AM for our reservation. This is actually a little early for us but the next available time was 12:15. A girl came out and rang a triangle. After that, names were called in groups of 6, you were given a card to take into the restaurant and seated. You can order off the menu or eat from the buffet. We both decided to have to buffet as you could sample different things. They had fried chicken, baked chicken, collard greens, mashed potatoes, yams, lima beans, black eyed peas, creamed corn, mac and cheese, and a salad bar. They give you a Johnny cake and a cheddar garlic biscuit and dessert is included. Our choices today were banana pudding, peach cobbler, or butter gooey cake. It isn’t high class fare but it was good.
After we ate we walked across the street and purchased tour tickets. We are taking the trolley tour that allows us to get on and off at various stops. The trolley drivers are very informative and interesting. Savanna was not burned in Sherman’s march to the sea during the Civil War so it still has most of its original buildings.
One of the buildings we saw was the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Law, the Founder of the Girl Scouts. A block or so away is Chippewa square and the Independent Presbyterian Church, which are both prominent in the movie Forrest Gump. The feather that falls at the beginning of the movie falls from the church steeple and Forrest Gump is sitting on a bench in Chippewa Square.
There are many haunted houses in Savanna but we didn’t see any ghosts or goblins. We did see some dressed up dogs as it was Wag-o-Ween day. People in the city dressed up their dogs and different stores around town had treats for the animals.
We got off the trolley at stop 11, which was at the River Walk area. There are a number of stores and restaurants here. There is also a market where people were selling their crafts. We walked through a couple of candy stores and were able to keep from buying anything. We did see a big sailing ship and a paddle wheeler; but it did look like only the paddle wheeler actually went out.
By this time my legs were killing me so we made our way back to the car and headed back across the river to the campground. I rested with my legs up for awhile and then made some soup for dinner. I will certainly sleep well tonight. Enjoy the pictures
