Stone Mountain Park

Saturday, October 30

We had a lot of campers arrive last night and get all setup and ready for Halloween.  Lights, pumpkins, witches, fires, they had it all.  Our poor little site looked sad as we don't have any decorations, no place to keep them.

For some reason we were up pretty early, for me anyway.  I decided to make French Toast for breakfast.  I had picked up a loaf of Texas Toast at the grocery store a couple of days ago so I fixed the whole thing.  The leftovers can be heated in the microwave or toaster oven and enjoyed on other days.  I must say that they came out pretty good.  I keep thinking that I could make this for breakfast with our camping group but then decide that is too much work.  You get about 16 slices in a loaf of bread, you need about 4 eggs, vanilla, sugar and milk or cream for each loaf.  Then you have to cook all of them.  Figure most people would have 2 slices, at a minimum, and there are about 40 people at each campout.  That comes to a minimum of 5 loaves of bread, 2 dozen eggs, probably a bottle of vanilla and a half gallon of milk.  Knowing some of the guys in our group it would be much more than that.  Sorry guys, looks like french bread casseroles are what you get!

After such a big breakfast we decided that we probably won't want lunch so we headed over to the park.  (We had originally planned on going after lunch and returning to the rig for dinner).  It is a pretty nice place but it was a lot smaller than I thought it would be.  They don't have a lot of rides.  We did ride the train which circles the park.

Behind the train station is a mini golf course.  We didn't play that though.

There were a few shops and restaurants throughout the park.  This weekend they were celebrating Halloween so there were things like pumpkin painting, face painting and pumpkin carving.  I think there was a costume parade but we didn't see that.  After walking around this part of the park we headed over to the sky ride.  This takes you to the top of Stone Mountain.  You can also hike up the 1.5 mile trail but no, thank you.
You did get a great view of the golf course, the area of the campground and the Marina.  You could also see downtown Atlanta but it was kind of smoggy.

We also saw a blimp when we were up there.

As we were driving back to the campground we stopped to visit the Carillon.  This is a bell tower and the organ used to play it.  They give live concerts a couple of times a day but we weren't fortunate enough to see that.  The bells chime every 15 minutes and we happened to be there at 2:00 PM so we heard the whole thing.  They also played some recorded songs.

Back at the rig we rested a bit and had dinner.  I made pasta and used the whole wheat pasta.  It tastes different from regular pasta but is suppose to be better for you.  I think it will take some getting used to but I do prefer the regular stuff.

Around 7:00 PM we headed back over to the park to see the laser show.  I was surprised how cold it got once the sun went down.  I changed into a sweat shirt and long pants and was still cold.  We took our carry around chairs, picked a spot out on the lawn and settled down for some people watching.  The laser show wasn't scheduled to start until 8:00 PM and we wanted to get a good spot.  A good portion of the lawn was closed as they are making snow for a holiday sled ride.  This picture is from yesterday and the pile is a lot taller today!

The laser show was a celebration of Georgia.  They played music from famous Georgians like Little Richard and Alan Jackson.  I took some pictures but they didn't turn out that great.  They are a bit blurry.  It was too dark for my little camera.  I tried using various settings.  There were also some fireworks.  Here are a couple of them.

When the show was over we returned to the rig and found more camp sites taken.  We won't be here for Halloween as we are moving on tomorrow.  That was our day.  I hope you enjoy the pictures.
