Colorado Springs, CO

Thursday, May 26

We got a late start today, a little later than we planned.  Time just flew.  Anyway, no interstates for us today, we are going to be using US Hwys.  We also have to cross the Rockies to get to Colorado Springs.  According to the GPS we have 191 miles to do today.  I didn't pay enough attention to the route until we started climbing, and climbing, and climbing.  The Monarch Summit was at 11, 312 ft high.  Up in rare air and it was cool.  The wind was also blowing.

It took about 4 1/2 hours to get to Colorado Springs, CO and the US Air Force Academy Campground.  We will be staying here until Monday morning.  We just missed the graduation as it took place today.  But actually, that meant that the campground is not full and we could get in.  My original plans were to stay here starting yesterday but couldn't get a reservation.  When we pulled into our spot we saw this across from us -

How would you like to drive this rig?

Anyway, we are in and setup.  I called and made reservations for the Cog Railroad to the top of Pikes Peak tomorrow.  The road isn't open to the top yet but the train will go up and the store at the top is open.  We will be taking really heavy coats as it is around 32 degrees up there.  Hope it doesn't snow.

This campground is nice but we are hearing train whistles blowing.  I hope that doesn't happen all night.

Enjoy the pictures.
