Leaving Rapid City

Monday & Tuesday, 5/28 & 5/29/2012

Monday during the day we didn't do much except put some things away in anticipation of leaving Tuesday morning.  We did leave later in the evening to head back over to the Mount Rushmore Memorial for the night lighting of the monument.  It is a very moving experience.  We have done this before but it still thrills me.

We decided to finally get the ice cream we have tried to get a couple of times.  Since many people had left the area during the day, there wasn't as big crowd at Rushmore in the evening.  We  waited in the dining room until it was almost time to go down to the amphitheatre.  It was very windy and cold.  We had thought ahead and brought our heaviest jackets with us as well as our gloves.

The Park Ranger gave a talk about the history of the monument and some comments were also made about Memorial Day.  A 20 minute film is shown, and it is very interesting.  Then they call all the Veterans and Active Duty Military to the stage and have a flag ceremony.  There were a number of Veterans and a couple of Active Duty people there.  One was a lady who served in the Navy during WWII!  She got a very rousing round of applause.

We got to the rig late, around 11:00 PM and went to bed.  We plan on being up early in the morning to leave.

Here are the pics from the ceremony.  A couple of them are a little dark but there wasn't much light available.

Tuesday  morning we were up bright and early.  We drove out of the campground around 8:00 AM.  On our way out we stopped for gas on base.  The diesel was only $3.83 a gal.  As we drove further East we saw diesel advertised for $3.75 but that was the cash price.

We drove 267 miles today.  All of it was on I90 so it was at a constant speed.  We stopped for the night at R & R Campground in Mitchell, SD.  This town is where the corn palace is.  We have been to that before and since we were both tired we decided not to drive out to it.  We had dinner and went to bed early.  Tomorrow we head over to Forest City, Iowa and the Winnebago plant.  Oh yeah, we are now in Central Time so we are 2 hours ahead of Calif.  Have a good night.
