Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, July 17 - 19
Tuesday morning we were up fairly early and on the road. It sure is funny driving my car with the window blocked. I only had to drive it to get it hooked up to the motorhome but it sure was weird. The trip to Effingham, IL was uneventful. We did gain an hour when we entered Central Time. We arrived at the Camp Lakewood Campground with no problems. Terry and Lydia beat us there by about an hour.
After getting everything setup we talked for a bit and made some plans. Terry called his family and we arranged to meet some of them that afternoon. We went with them to the meeting and met Terry's aunts who are in the late 80's. We enjoyed hearing stories about Terry when he was younger.
After that we went over to the Cracker Barrel Restaurant for dinner. I tried to find something to buy in the store but didn't see anything Bill and I could agree on. We spent the evening back at the rigs discussing our plans.
Wednesday morning we slept in. The glass repair guy was scheduled to arrive between noon and 2:00. He was a bit late but he finally made it. He found the campground without any problem. Bill and Terry had removed the plastic bag we had taped on but wouldn't you know it, just before the guy got there it started to rain! We quickly put the plastic back.
Terry and Lydia went to visit an old family friend while we waited for the work to get done. The windshield went on with no problem, it just took a bit of time. It was around 100 degrees during the day. The problem came in when the glass guy tried to put the driver's window in. It wouldn't roll up and down correctly. He called a few folks but nobody could determine why. It was decided that we would drive the car to Springfield in the morning to their shop, and leave it there for someone to work on it. Terry and Lydia went to visit some more family so Bill and I stayed at the rig. Bill did take me to the Urgent Care center as I have a bug bite that isn't healing correctly. The doctor gave me some antibiotics and it should be just fine.
Thursday morning we got up really early and took both cars into Springfield, a 90 mile trip. We found the shop and left our car. We will pick it up on Friday when we drive the rigs up here. We decided not to stick around and wait as we weren't sure what work needed to be done. We started driving back to Effingham and were about 40 minutes out when the shop called and said the car was done. We decided to continue home and get it tomorrow. It was right about then that I realized I left my phone in the car! Oh well, I will just have to return messages when I get it back.
We spent the rest of the day driving around. and Terry showed us some places he used to hang out at. We also found a couple of covered bridges (I didn't get a picture of the first one) and the farm where Lincoln's father lived. It is in Lerna, IL. The log cabin is not the original but is a reproduction on the actual site of the original cabin. Abraham Lincoln never lived in this cabin but did visit the family here after he moved to Springfield.
We had a great time driving up and down some gravel and dirt roads. We are very familiar with how corn and soybeans look as there were a number of fields.
Here are all the pictures I took.
