Saturday - Monday, July 14-16
Saturday was a very quiet day. We didn't do much. We did a little running around to Home Depot and Lowes. Neither store had what we needed but we finally found it at Walmart. I also mailed a package to Aimee and Nick.
Saturday evening the campground had a BBQ potluck. We decided to go since we really didn't have anything else to do. I made cole slaw using packaged slaw mix and I added some packaged broccoli slaw mix. It turned out nice and crunchy. Unfortunately there weren't many people there. We did enjoy visiting with those that were there and we also enjoyed the burgers and hot dogs. Afterwards we just went back to the rig.
Sunday was also a quiet day. We decided to go to the movie on base at 7 PM. This may have been a mistake. I want to at here that we are both fine. We did go and everything looked fine, weather wise, when we went in. During the movie I heard a base wide announcement but couldn't understand it. Since nobody came into the theater to say anything I assumed it was nothing. Anyway, the movie finished and just as we were getting up to leave the power went out in the theater! The emergency lights came on right away and we headed into the lobby to see what was happening. Well, it was a major thunderstorm going on just outside! The wind was blowing really hard and the rain was pouring! There was also a lot of thunder and lightening and it was close. After about 5-10 minutes the rain pretty much stopped so we ran to the car. Just as I was getting ready to open my door I thought, "Hmm, something doesn't look right." And it didn't. The driver's side window was shattered! Glass was all over the seat and floor of the car. It was also outside the car. Great, just what we needed. We got some of the towels we carry in the car and pushed most of the glass out of the seat. I put an old beach towel on the seat so I could drive back to the campground. Luckily it was stopped raining by this time. I surprised the gate guard when we pulled into the part of the base where the campground is. I didn't have to roll down my window to show my ID. I also noticed that my windshield had a nice crack in it. In the morning we also found a couple of little stars in the windshield.
Back at the campground we vacuumed up the glass with the Shop Vac and we removed what glass was left in the window. Then we used a large trash bag to cover the opening. We had to keep any more rain out. All of this around 10:00 PM. I called the insurance company and we are having everything repaired in a couple of days. They are replacing both the window and the windshield. They located a glass place in Effingham, Illinois where we plan on staying for a couple of days.
We got to bed around midnight after cleaning everything up and talking to the insurance company.
I took a couple of pictures in the morning and saw that the windshield crack had gotten longer. Guess they won't be repairing that. We decided that something was blown into the window and windshield during the storm. Upon closer examination in the morning we discovered some really little nicks on the car like it had been hit with pebbles or something. I also talked with the glass company and they will meet us in Illinois at the campground on Wednesday to get the work done.
We won't be driving the car for a couple of days but we can still tow it. We hooked up this morning and headed out for Indianapolis, IN. Tuesday morning we will head to Effingham, IL, where we are meeting our friends and now the glass company. I guess if we go anywhere on Tuesday evening Terry will have to drive.
Oh yeah, now we will have to get another military sticker for the car. We will have to find a Navy or Marine base to do that as the Army and Air Force don't issue them anymore.
Here are the pictures I took -
