Today started a lot earlier than I wanted it to. A number of the sites in this campground do not have sewers so when people leave they want to dump their tanks. Guess where the dump station is? Yep, right by my bedroom window and since the windows were open it disturbed my sleep. This morning three big diesel pushers all dumped, one right after the other, and all left their engines running! A not so nice wake up call.
Once everyone was up and ready we took off for an hours drive to visit Sault St Marie and the Soo Locks. I slept most of the way. The locks and the St Mary River separates Lake Huron and Lake Superior. The original lock was built, starting in 1889, and completed in 1895. In 1996 a new recreational lock, one made for smaller ships, was started and completed in 1998. It was a really interesting trip. When we entered the first lock we were at a lower water level than the other side. Valves open under water and fill the inside of the lock until the water level is even with the other side. The process really doesn't take very long. We thought we would be able to see the water pouring in but it all happens underwater.
Going in.
Going out
On the return trip we started out higher and had to lower the water level to go back to our dock.
Some of the things we saw on our trip -
The Elks club has a campground right on the river -
As we approached the Canadian side of the river we saw the Millennium Fountain -
We also saw the bridge between the US and Canada. Traffic looked pretty backed up though -
The entire tour took about 2 1/2 hours and we all enjoyed it.
After the tour was over we drove downtown and found a little place to have lunch. We had some pretty good sandwiches. Soon we were headed back to St Ignace. It was Lydia's turn to fix dinner and it was really good. We also made plans to go to Mackinac Island tomorrow. They offered a military discount so Bill and I drove into the dock to get the tickets. We plan on spending a lot of time on the island tomorrow so I may not get those pictures posted for a couple of days.
Here all all the pictures I took today. Enjoy
