Wyoming Frontier Prison

June 22, 2013, Saturday

We decided to go exploring today in Rawlins.  The first stop was the Wyoming Frontier Prison.  It was first constructed in 1893 and closed in 1981.  This prison housed both female and male prisoners.   Death sentences were first done by hanging and eventually moved to the gas chamber.   This prison was also used in the movie Prison in 1988 staring Viggo Mortensen.  They sell the movie at the gift shop but we didn't buy it.

The young man giving the tour was very informative and personable.  We enjoyed his spiel as did the family that was with us.  The tour covers about 3/4 of a mile and takes about 45 minutes.  We didn't even realize it was that long!  Many changes were made over the life of the prison.  Here are a couple more pictures I took.

After touring the prison we drove through town.  Don't blink or you will miss it.  Not much here.  Most of the newer places are down by the Interstate.  Too bad that is what happens to most towns.  If the road doesn't go through it, it dies.

We did stop and take a picture of a train they have in a local park.

We also stopped and took a couple of pictures of the park we are staying in.

We had a quiet afternoon and a nice simple dinner.  Tomorrow I don't know what we are going to do but I will keep you updated.  Have a good day.
