Gering, NE

Aug 3-5, 2013,  Saturday - Monday

Saturday was a quiet day with us not doing much.  We did go out to dinner at a place called Whiskey Creek Steakhouse.  It was just up the road from the campground.  The food was pretty good.  We both had ribs but I had a combo that also had smoked brisket.  I brought the brisket home as I was full.  They did do one odd thing, they brought a loaf of bread when you got to your seat and then you also got cornbread muffins with the meal.  We brought the muffins home.  They also had buckets of peanuts on the tables and you threw the shells on the floor.

Sunday morning  we got up and got ready to move.  We are driving about 175 miles to Gering, NE for a few days.  After we drove away I realized that I forgot to take pictures of the campground (Holiday RV).  It was a pretty nice place, lots of grass and the sites were gravel.  The drive was uneventful.  Nebraska is a nice and flat state.  There is a lot of corn being grown here also.  We are staying in an RV park owned by the city.  It is a very nice place.  We have a full hookup site but don't have cable.  They price your site by the options you pick.  They have water & power only, full hookup no cable and full hookup with cable.  Since we have satellite we didn't need the cable.  We got settled in and rested for the remainder of the day.

Looking out our front window you see this -

That is Scotts Bluff National Monument.  The clouds rolled in during the afternoon and I thought we were in for another thunder storm but got lucky and it passed.  We just had some wind and a little shower.

On Monday we went exploring.  Our first stop was Scotts Bluff National Monument.  Most of Nebraska is flat but then you come across the bluffs.  I was surprised to see them in the part of the country.  Gering is along the Oregon Trail (also parts of the Mormon Trail and the Pony Express).  Scotts Bluff is one of the landmarks the travelers used to determine how far they had to go.  Once they reached this area they had traveled 1/3 of their trek.

We enjoyed checking this area out.  After we finished at Scotts Bluff we headed back east about 15 miles to view Chimney Rock.  This is the first monument people travelers come upon.

It really does look like a chimney.

We drove through town after that.  It took about 5 minutes.  We stopped at a restaurant called The Log Cabin Inn and Restaurant.  The food wasn't bad but was odd.  I ordered the daily special of beef stroganoff.  In my mind this is stew beef in a beef broth and sour cream, usually served over noodles.  Well, what I got was served over noodles but it was what I call hamburger gravy (hamburger in white gravy).  It tasted fine but certainly wasn't what I expected.  Bill had liver and onions and said it was good.  He also had beef and dumpling soup that looked like beef barley soup to me.  Different places, different tastes.

The afternoon got cooler than it had been (highs in the upper 80's) and we spent some time outside.

That was our day.  Tomorrow we are going into Scottsbluff (the town) to see what we can see.  Have fun and enjoy the pictures.
