Aug 1-2, 2013, Thursday & Friday
Thursday was a moving day for us. We traveled about 220 miles east on I-80 to North Platte, NE. We are here for 3 nights. The drive was uneventful but we did discover, when we got to the campground, that one of the hub covers on the motorhome was missing.
We stopped at a rest area about 50 miles down the road and don't remember it being missing then so I guess it came off after that. Anyway, we located a Freightliner dealer close by to see if we could buy one. We are also missing 3 lug covers but those have been missing for awhile. So while we were there the guy asked if we had had a certain recall done. It was an older one but we didn't know and it concerned steering. We made arrangements to bring the rig in tomorrow morning to get it checked. We were not able to get the cover as it has to be ordered. He did tell us it wouldn't hurt to go without it. We will have to order one when we are in someplace for a week or so.
So we went back to the rig and told the campground we would be leaving in the morning but coming back so don't give our site away.
It was a quiet evening until we decided to go to bed. Since we will be getting up early to be at Freightliner around 8:00 we went to bed around 10:00. Oh yeah, we are now in Central Time so there is a 2 hour time difference. We will go back to Mountain Time on Sunday when we head back West. So just as we were getting ready for bed the weather radio went off. Severe thunderstorms with hail, rain and wind. Joy, joy. We are so tired of these things. I don't mind the rain or the wind but the hail can be damaging to the rig and the car. So far we have had only pea size hail. We decided that since we had to leave in the morning anyway we would pull in the slides and bring the satellite dish down. Once we did that we said the heck with going to the bathhouse and we went to sleep. Nothing bothered me after that.
Friday morning the alarm went off way too early in the morning. I stumbled out of bed and got dressed. As Bill was unhooking the water, the hose part of the water pump came off. Just what we needed. Without this we can't use any water in the rig. So off to Freightliner. We dropped the rig and went down the street to Larry's RV to see if they could help with the water pump. They said to come by after we were done at Freightliner and they would see what they could do.
So after that we headed out for breakfast. Hey, you wake me up early, you take me out to breakfast. We went down the road to the Denny's in the Flying J. I guess we got a new waitress or something as she was SLOWWWWW. When we finally got our food and drinks it was good but we were there almost an hour. We headed back to Freightliner and were told we didn't need the recall, our rig was in the excluded group. Yeah! Next it was down the street to Larry's. The guy came out and looked at the pump. He found the clip that holds the hose in the pump was stretched out and got a new one. We were only there about 15 minutes and it charged us $10 so we were happy. I got up early, had breakfast out and the repairs to the rig only cost $10 and was completed quickly. We were back at the campground and hooked up by 10:30.
Once we finished hooking up we headed out to do a little exploring. Both of us were tired so we weren't going to do a lot. Our first stop was at the Union Pacific Railroad Yard. There is a tower you can go up and see the entire yard.
As we were walking in there was a crop duster flying over the fields that surrounded the train yard. It was interesting to see how he did it.
There were some volunteers up on the 8th floor who were more than willing to answer any questions you had. We enjoyed our time up there.
Since it was just around 12:30 we decided to go ahead and head over to the Buffalo Bill State Park that used to be his ranch. He stayed here when his show was wintering. It is called Scout's Rest Ranch.
They have most of the original furniture and other items. It was interesting to visit.
I took a lot of pictures so be sure to watch the slideshow -
We thought we would stop at Dairy Queen on the way back and treat ourselves to an ice cream. We went inside and when we stood there for about 10 minutes and we not waited on (three different employees came up to the counter but never looked at us) we left. We did drive through Sonic (which also took a long time, does everyone in this town move slowly?) and got sundaes, which we took back with us.
Back at the rig we both took a short nap and then had dinner. I fixed turkey breast with leftover scalloped potatoes, corn on the cob and fresh tomatoes. I hope there are no thunderstorms tonight and we can get a good nights sleep.
So I hope you have a good day and enjoy the pictures.
