We made the 125 mile trip down I-5 with no problem. As we got closer to I-80 the traffic picked up and reminded us that we are now in Calif. Fairfield is a pretty big city about half way between Sacramento and San Francisco so the traffic is bad. One thing good has happened, since the last time we were up here they have resurfaced the freeway and all the really bad potholes are gone. Getting to the base wasn't a problem and they had plenty of room for us. This campground is right next to the main gate and all the stores. There is also a gas station that actually has diesel! Yeah! We will stop there Tuesday morning when we leave.
Saturday night we went for a drive to a new restaurant chain called Black Bear Diner. We have been seeing billboards for it and since there was one about 7 miles from the base we went there for dinner. I saw that there is one in Signal Hill and one in Torrance, which isn't too far from where we will be staying in Seal Beach. The food was pretty good, nothing fancy but good.
I have killed my second GPS. When my Rand McNally GPS died I started using my old Magellan instead. So between Yreka and Corning, CA the power connection stopped working. At first I thought the cable had gone out so I tried a different cable, same problem. I tried to charge the battery with a plug in the wall cable but no such luck. The only way I can charge the battery is to plug it into my computer with the USB cable. Then I use it until the battery goes dead again. Good thing I planned on buying a new GPS soon.
On Sunday we took a drive over to the Napa wine country. We like to visit when we are in the area. There are very few wineries that let you sample for free anymore but I did sample at a couple. We picked up some wine for a friend and some for me. Our friends favorite winery is V Sattui and they only sell their wine at the winery.
I also bought some wine at Berringer Winery. The house in the second picture was where the family used to live. There is a stained glass window that was used in the opening scene of the TV show Flacon Crest.
We stopped a couple of other places. I really like browsing at the Culinary Institute. They have some really neat kitchen items.
On the way back we stopped at a company I used to work with - Jelly Belly. We picked up some Belly Flops, which are jelly beans that don't stand up to the standard.
Soon we headed back to the base.
On Monday we went to see the movie Gravity. I enjoyed it. It kept you on the edge of your seat.
When the government shut down on the 1st, all the commissaries on the bases all closed. The commissaries are the military grocery stores. I don't know what happened but money somehow became available and they reopened today. That meant I was able to pick up some things I needed but didn't want to buy in town. So that chore is done.
That is all. Enjoy the few pictures I took. I will try to remember to take some of the campground tomorrow before we leave.
