Carthage, MO

Monday - Tuesday, July 7-8, 2014

Monday we drove about 250 miles to Carthage, MO.  We are camped at the Big Red Barn RV Park.  They offer a 30% discount to military so we got a good price.  This park used to be a Passport America park but they aren't any more.  We are in site 30.  It is a nice shady spot but that means no satellite TV due to trees.  Good thing they have a good cable setup so we will only miss one of the TV shows we like.  Why is it that there are a number of shows on Monday & Tuesday but nothing on the remaining nights.  We normally would record one while we watch one but can't do that without satellite.  Good thing the cable shows on USA and TNT generally repeat on other nights.

It was really hot again last night and it was forecast to rain so we couldn't leave the windows open so we ran the air conditioner all night.  Unfortunately, it will hot again tonight but we won't have air.  While we were out exploring the area today our coach air died.  The fan part still works but the compressor isn't kicking on.  I called a mobile repair guy but he has never worked on Winnebago basement air before.  I called a couple of repair shops in the area and got the same story.  One place said they could work on it but not until August.  Thanks a lot, Coachlight RV in Carthage for not taking into account it is an emergency.  I finally located a Winnebago dealer in Joplin, MO, about 15 miles from here.  He will squeeze us in tomorrow.  We will drive over to his shop in the morning.  Hopefully it isn't anything major and we don't have to wait for parts.  So I am sitting outside in the shade typing this.   It is cooler outside than in the coach.  I have all the windows open and the fan blowing.  It is the mugginess that is killing me.  It doesn't seem to bother Bill.

So anyway, we spent the morning at the Precious Moments Chapel and Museum.  The gentleman who designed the Precious Moments line is Sam Butcher and he is very religious.  He built the Chapel to honor God.  He is still living and is 75 years old.  He is still working on the paintings and murals in the Chapel.  He was on the grounds today but we didn't see him.  Many people he has met or heard about are portrayed in the various murals.  It is very inspiring.

After we left Precious Moments we headed into downtown to find the Post Office.  We had a couple of things to mail.  It was interesting as they had drop-off mailboxes right in the middle of the street!  We drove around a bit and stopped at the little cafe for lunch.  We decided to have our bigger meal at lunch and something light tonight.  I had the special, pork tenderloin and Bill and liver and onions.  They were just OK.  We then headed back to the rig where we found out about the air conditioner.  Bummer.

So that is all for today.  Here are all the pictures I took today.

You could always splurge and spend one night in a hotel with A/C. I would not suggest sleeping under the stars as the skeeters would suck you dry!!! Did you know that only the females suck?!
