Edgington Destination RV Park
Alamogordo, NM
We had a very short drive today, around 125 miles, so we all had a nice leisurely morning and didn't leave the campground until after 10:00 AM. The skies are clear and it doesn't look like rain but it is a little on the cool side and windy.
We all decided to stop at the Pilot in Las Cruces, NM to top off our tanks before heading off the interstates. We will still be able to find gas, just not the big truck stops like on the highways.
As we drove down the highway we started seeing signs and info on missiles and other space stuff. Turns out the area is a good place for testing missiles.
We passed the White Sands National Monument. We plan on heading back there tomorrow to explore. We also passed Holloman AFB. We didn't stay at the Famcamp as we couldn't make reservations there but as we drove by we saw that we would have easily fit in. That is OK. The place we are staying at is actually $5 a night less. The owner was here when we pulled in and we got all set up.
After that we decided to head up the road a mile or two and visit a pistachio farm. We actually visited 2. We samples some nuts and took a tour at the first one. It was McGinn's farm and it has a large nut outside.
The nut was erected in memory of the original owner of the farm.
We had a very educational tour. Did you know that there must be a male and a female tree in order to grow pistachio's? Neither did I! Only the female trees bare fruit. The only job of the male tree is to pollinate the female trees. A female tree must be about 8 years old before it will bear fruit.
After exploring the pistachio farms we went back to the campground to have dinner. We decided to have our leftover hot dogs and anything else that was leftover to clear our refrigerators. We also thought we would sit outside but it got cool and windy between the time we got home and the time dinner was ready but we braved the temps.
So that was our day. I hope you had a good one. Here are all the pictures I took -
