Elk Park, NC Day 2

Sunday, 8/09/2015
Elk Park, NC

Today we headed to the Tweetsie Railroad.  It is a local amusement park that is based on the old west.  One reason we wanted to go today was to see the Riders In The Sky.  They are a singing group that keeps the old cowboy songs alive and well.  We have seen them at the Grand Ole Opry.

We really like their music and sang and clapped along with everyone else.

The park is not very big.  It kinda reminds me of Knott's back when I was a kid.  They have the train, shows and a few rides.  We didn't do most of the rides as they were either for little kids or the type we don't like.

We walked around and bought a funnel cake.  Gotta have one of those.  After eating that we decided to ride the train.  They don't have the train robbers, like a lot of places have, but they did put on a little cowboy show at two stops.

After we got off the train we headed over to see the cloggers.  They were bringing young kids on stage to teach them how to clog.  It was cute.

Since this park is built on a mountain there is a lot of uphill and downhill.  To get to the next area we took a chair lift.  It was a fun way to get up the hill.

Up there was a mine ride and a few other things.  The mine ride told the story of a mouse who found a mine with veins of cheese in it.  It was a cute little story.  Once inside the mine you saw this -

Next we walked up to the Deer Park Zoo.  They have a few animals you can pet and feed.  We didn't buy any feed but did walk around.

Deer

Potbelly pig

Baby Pygmy Goat

Llama

The kids really enjoyed the animals.  We watched one of the baby pygmy goats crawl out of their enclosure.  He also made his way back in via a depression in the dirt.

We watched a magic show while up here.  Not a bad show.

We didn't go into the County Fair area as it was mostly rides we weren't going to ride.

We left around 3:30 and headed back to the campground.  We were looking for a restaurant for dinner but most of them were either chains we could visit anywhere or they didn't open for dinner until 5:00.  We were following the GPS to a diner but it wasn't there.  We pulled into a shopping center to check the GPS and Trip Advisor for another place and there was an Italian place there so we went there.  It is called Bella's and was fine.  We also walked over to the Food Lion grocery to pick up a couple things.

It was a nice day.  The weather was great and we had a good time at the park.  Here are all the pictures
