Hurricane Mills, TN Days 1-2

Thursday - Friday, 9/03-04/2015
Loretta Lynn's Campground
Hurricane Mills, TN

We left Nashville later in the morning on Thursday.  We only have about an hour and a half drive to Hurricane Mills and checkout at the COE park was 2:00 PM so we hung around until about 11:00.   Since we didn't have a sewer hookup at the site we could either dump at the dump station or wait until we got to the next place.  We decided to wait.  The drive was uneventful even though we got a bit of rain we weren't expecting.

We pulled into Loretta Lynn's campground and signed in.  Thanks for the reservations, Gary.  They were listed under Mansfield but we got them changed with no problem.  They don't assign sites here, they just point out on the small map the area you can park in.  We unhooked the car and started up the hill.  There are a lot of trees so we were looking for one where we could get satellite.  We decided one of two sites across from the store and showers would work.  Only problem, the sites in the campground are really, really tight.  Bill had to avoid and tree on one side and the electric hookup box on the other.  After a couple of back and forth we got in the site.  The sites are very long but the hookups are all in the rear so that is where we stationed the rig.  We had to use about 20 feet or more of sewer hose.  As luck would have it the brand new sewer hose we bought at Camping World in Nashville was broken when we took it out of the box.  Bummer!  We really have to dump the grey water as it is holding 4 days worth.  We walked over to the store and they had hoses but they were the kind without connectors.  I drove down to the little store across from the office but they had the same thing.  Next I tried to locate a Walmart but the cell service here is non-existent.  I was able to get on the wifi they provide and locate the Walmart 12 miles away.  So off we went.  We were able to get a sewer hose there.  Whew!  Back at the rig Bill hooked stuff up and we settled in.

We drove around the complex a bit before settling into the rig for the night.

On Friday many, many more rigs came into the campground.  There are a bunch of sites around here.  Some, the area we are in, have full hookups.  Some have water and electric, some have electric only and some are dry sites.  There is an area for horses and all the horse people are parked down there.  We talked to some of the horse people and there is a big trail ride starting on Monday so they are here early for that.

There is also a motocross track.  They hold a big motocross rally in October.

We drove over to the "town' of Hurricane Mills.  It is really just the area of that Loretta Lynn owns.  The town was named after the Hurricane Creek and the Grist Mill that was along side the creek.  Over in that area is where the Mansion, the museum, a replica of the home in Butcher Hollow, and other buildings are.  We decided to tour the Mansion.  You can get a variety of tours based on what you want to see, with varying prices.  You cannot take pictures in the Mansion but I have a few of the outside.

Mansion
Loretta Lynn and her family lived here for 20 years, from about 1966 to 1988,  and the inside is just as they left it.  You can't go upstairs but the master bedroom is downstairs so you can see that.  Loretta and her husband, Moody, now live in a house that was built behind this one.

We have decided that rude people come out on holiday weekends.  There is a group of people here parked about 2 sites down on our right.  In the site next to us on the left is a rig belonging to people in that group.  So guess where they walk and ride their bikes when they want to go from site to site?  That's right, directly through ours.  And this is not just the kids but the adults too.  And when I say directly through ours I mean between our car, which is parked in front of the rig, and the rig!  We have asked them twice not to do that.  I have even pulled the car closer to rig to stop it.  Let's see if it works.  I wonder if they walk across their neighbors lawns at home?

When we were in one of the stores the lady there told us there was music at the campfire tonight at 7:00.  We located the area and went back in the evening.  There was a guy singing but no campfire  His name was Rodgers Riggs.  He was not bad,  His kids also sang a few songs.  We had fun watching the audience.  Most of them were drunk and loud.

The lady at the store also said that they light up the little waterfall and the house each night at 900 so we went to check it out.  The waterfall was pretty but there weren't many lights on the house.

Back at the rig we settled in for the remainder of the night.  I hope you enjoy all the pictures.
