We spent the last few days in Bill's hometown, Pottsville, PA. We started out on Thursday morning, and after one quick back to the house when we were a couple of miles down the road to get things we forgot, we started off. The drive was exactly 500 miles, door to door. We got on the road around 8:45 AM and arrived at the hotel around 7:00 PM. We did stop once for breakfast, once for dinner, and a couple of rest stops to stretch our legs. The traffic was light most of the way, with slowdowns only in construction areas.
Friday we had breakfast at the hotel and drove around town to check things out. There is very little new in town, a couple of new restaurants and a bunch of closed ones. We picked up Sue, Bill's sister, and his brother, Ron, and went to visit cousins on their mother's side of the family. We went to dinner with them and spent some time talking and catching up.
Saturday was our cousins lunch, on Bill's dad's side of the family. We met people we hadn't seen before and some we had. It was a very nice lunch and we exchanged a lot of family information.
They get together every so often. Hopefully, we will be able to attend another get together in the future. After lunch we went to Aunt Ruth's house with some of the group and continued the conversations. It was great to meet family and renew connections. Because we ate a big lunch, including dessert, we skipped dinner.
Sunday we once again had breakfast at the hotel and then drove around a bit. We stopped at the mall so Bill could have his Coney Island burger. Then we did a bit of shopping at Boscov's. After that we went up to the cemetery to visit his folks there.
The schools party was at 2:00 PM at the Yuengling's brewery so we headed in that direction. It was an nice gathering. Bill talked to some old friends and we had some food.
We stayed about 1 1/2 hours so we don't know how long it lasted. I think the locals who know each other well stayed a lot longer. Bill got a picture with Dick Yuengling -
In the evening we went to Sue's house to say our goodbye's and talk for a bit. We told her the road runs in both directions so she can come visit us soon. We will see.
Monday morning we got up early and headed out. We stopped for breakfast before getting on the road and after a couple of rest breaks we finally arrived home. I was looking forward to sleeping in my own bed again. I called in an order for pizza for dinner as I didn't want to get back in the car to go anywhere. We unpacked and started doing laundry and other stuff. I think I will sleep in tomorrow.
