We drove to Bill’s hometown in PA to visit the family there. We left last Wednesday morning. It is about 500 miles so we broke the trip into two days. We stopped the first night in New Stanton, PA, just before the turnpike starts. We stayed in a nice Hampton Inn. We decided to take a dip in the pool to refresh ourselves. Boy was that a mistake. For a heated pool, it wasn’t very heated. We did spend a little time floating and swimming but not long. I wish they would have had a hot tub. For dinner we decided to try a place called TJ’s restaurant and sports lounge. The reviews online were good and the menu looked okay. When we got there we found it really was just a bar with some tables to eat at. They didn’t have the same menu as there was online, only sandwiches and burgers. Oh well, we ate and the food was fine. Here is a picture of the place.

The next morning we finished the drive in. Since we got there around 1:00 we drove over to the house first and picked up Sue. Bill wanted to go to Coney Island and get his hamburger so that is where we had lunch. The place in the mall we usually went to is now closed so we went to the downtown location. They serve a more varied menu. After lunch we drove around a bit then made our way to the bed and breakfast we are staying at. It is called the Maids Quarters and is on the edge of downtown.
It is the stone building in the middle of the picture. There is a breakfast area/tea room downstairs, three rooms on the second floor and a suite on 5e third floor. We had a room on the second floor. It was a bit small. The other two are bigger. If we ever come back we would not stay in this room.
The first night was not good. One of the air conditioners for the third floor was directly over ours and dripped water onto ours all night. It kept us from getting a good sleep, we kept waking up. We talked to the owner the next day and they put a rag out on our air conditioner that absorbed most of the noise. I did look into getting a room at the local hotel but they were booked and the b&b didn’t offer refunds. I am still trying to figure out what there would be enough people visiting Pottsville to fill up the Ramada Inn! We have decided we are not bed and breakfast people.
Friday afternoon we picked up Sue and Ron and drove out to Heisler’s, an ice cream shop, to visit with others in the family, have lunch and ice cream. Bill got his CMP (chocolate, marshmallow, and peanuts on vanilla ice cream). I had a root beer float. We got to spend time with the cousins visiting. Here are
all the cousins that were there.
We also took pictures with all the spouses and families but I haven’t gotten a copy of that yet.
Saturday we had the day to ourselves. After breakfast at the b&b we drove out to the cemetery. The. We drove around checking out everything. We had dinner at Ruby Tuesday’s. It was ok. There isn’t. Lot to choose from in town. There were a couple of places downtown but I don’t like to park on the side of the road. I am not good at it. We also took a nap in the afternoon to catch upon the sleep we lost the other night. The b&b had a tea in the afternoon in the breakfast room. There were a lot of people there.
Sunday we drove up to see Bill’s cousins on his mother’s side. We spent the afternoon with them. I didn’t get pictures there. It rained off and on all day.
So info on the b&b. They served breakfast each day. There was a choice of eggs, an omelet or a sweet dish. That was Carmel French toast. We had something different each day. The main daisy was served with fruit and a homemade beer wheat bread. I was expecting a bit more in terms of baked goods but it was good. They had tea (of course) and coffee along with juice. They did have some snacks out every day like granola bars or some cookies. Would I stay there again? Maybe, but I would probably stay at the hotel as first choice.
We started home on Monday and stayed in the same town of New Stanton. We tried to go to a local Italian restaurant but when we got there we found their dinning room closed. You had to eat in the bar, and I didn’t like to looks of it so we settled on Bob Evans. Back at the hotel we settled in to watch some tv before bed.
Well we had an exciting evening. About 9:00 pm the fire alarm went off. That sucker was loud! We grabbed the important things, like purses, wallet, iPad, phones etc and headed out. We had three fire trucks and a bunch of cars and I believe an ambulance. It took about 30 minutes before they cleared us to return to the hotel. Rumor was it was someone smoking in the stairway.
For a small town they responded pretty quickly.
So now we plan on going to bed, and we hope to not have anymore excitement. Well the excitement didn’t stop. The fire alarm went off two more times. We only went down for the first and second alarms. The third one we were already in bed and assumed it was a false alarm like the others.
Tuesday morning we got up, had breakfast and left the hotel. We drove straight through and reached our house at just about 1:00. After unpacking and doing laundry we relaxed for the rest of the day. Now I have to decide what to do for dinner. That is it for this post.
