The trip part 2

Thursday July 6 - today was an early day.  We have a tour with T&C this morning to tour Sitka.  We went to the dining room for breakfast.  After eating we headed back to the room and got ready to go.  We found our bus and got on board.  Our first stop was St Michael’s Cathedral, the oldest Russian Church, established in 1837.  They have many artifacts dating back many years.  It is a very beautiful building.

Here is a picture of beautiful downtown Sitka.

Back on the bus and headed to our second stop.  The driver pointed out Mt. Edgecumbe, a local volcano.  He also pointed out the place where Russia signed over Alaska to the USA.  Stewart bought Alaska for $.02 an acre, a great price.  We stopped at the Sheldon Jackson museum.  He collected everything in her himself.  He wanted to preserve the history of the native Alaskans.

The last stop was at the National Park.  We saw a movie and visited the many totem poles.  Our bus driver gave us a lot of good info on totems.  Did you know the bottom of the totem is the most important?  Well it is, so if you are low man on the totem pole you are very important.

There were some very enterprising kids selling drinks and snacks.  I bet they made a lot of money.

We also saw a dance group that interpreted the Russian part of Alaska history.

Back at the ship we had a light snack and went back to our rooms to rest before dinner. I actually remembered to take pictures of dinner so here they are.
Dessert was a lemon meringue cheesecake

After dinner Cathye went to lay down as she wasn’t feeling good.  The rest of us went to get our seats for the comedian. I didn’t take any pictures of him but he was really good.  His name is Jose Sarducy.  Cathye started to feel better and joined us just before the show started.  Once we finished laughing we headed to the Rolling Stone lounge to hear country music, or so we thought.  Turns out is was the house band and they played the songs like they were rock.  And they didn’t know the words to the songs so they were off beat.  Oh well, we stayed for the 45 minute show anyway.

Friday July 7 - Ketchikan is our port today and it is early, early, early.  Bill and I decided to have room service so we could eat and get ready at the same time.  T&C are early risers so they went to the buffet.  The food came at the requested time and I felt sorry for the guy who delivered it.  That tray was heavy!  We shared scrambled eggs, hash browns, bacon, sausage, danish, fruit, yogurt, coffee and tea.  Yummy.

Once again we are going on a tour with T&C.  Our first stop did not require us to get on a bus.  It was right in town.  We had a few minutes and checked out the local stores then headed over to the Great American Lumberjack show.  There are two teams, USA vs Canada.  We were on the USA side and we won of course.

There was a family sitting in front of us and grandma was with them.  We kept trying to get the lumberjacks to give her the prize. But they didn’t.
After the lumberjack show we made our way to the bus.  We were headed to native historical area, Saxon Village and Totem pole area.  They presented a traditional dance for a potlach, or visit.

Afterward we headed to the totem pole area. There was someone working on a new totem and many others to look at.

We did a bit more shopping then headed back to the ship.  Bill and I had a bite of lunch in the dining room and then back to our room.  Tonight is the second dressy night. We didn’t get as dressy as the first one but did change from our everyday stuff.  Before we did that we put on some shirts Cathye bought us to take a picture.  We stopped someone in the hallway to take it.

Dinner was in the dining room and most of us enjoyed it.  Terry was disappointed in his lobster. He said it was dry and tough but he ate it.  We all had the lava cake for dessert.

After dinner we went to the second show by the dance company.  I liked this one better.  We tried the music in the lounge but didn’t like it so we went to our room.
