Shipshewana Flea Market & Auction

Tuesday, Aug 17

School started in this area today. Poor kids!

We drove about 30 miles or so down the road to visit the Shipshewana Flea Market & Auction. It is only open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I was really surprised by the number of people trying to get to the same place as us. This is the most traffic we have seen since we have been in the area. That combined with the road construction made for some thick traffic.

After we finally found a parking spot we headed to the flea market. It was mostly what we call a swap meet. They sold just about the same stuff. There was some Amish made items. There were also some local farmers selling items. We walked around for awhile before heading into the big red barn on site. This was a market and stores. I really liked the market. If I lived in this area I would do all my meat and cheese shopping in this place! It was cool. I had brought along a small cooler and ice packs just in case I bought something so I had to buy something, didn't I? I got some meat - ground turkey (which is hard to find around here), sausage, a beef roast and a buffalo steak. I also got some jelly, kettle corn, and two soup mixes. I easily could have bought a whole lot of stuff. They had some great spices and spice mixes.

After shopping we headed down the road a bit to Das Dutchman Essenhaus for lunch/dinner. It is an Amish type restaurant that serves both menu items and family style. We went to the family style part of the restaurant. We had a salad, fresh loaf of bread, chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, noodles, and choice of corn or green beans, a drink and a slice of pie for dessert! You can also get additional meats for an additional price. They had ham, roast beef and something else I don't remember. We decided we didn't need the additional food. They don't let you take what you don't eat home with you except the pie. There are a number of stores you can browse through as well as a bakery that had some amazing stuff. We have to leave the area before we get too fat!

We waddled home and rested. We actually had to start packing things up to move tomorrow, early. We also spent a little time figuring out where we were headed. Our plans have changed so many times it isn't funny. I don't know why I plan too far ahead. So enjoy the pictures.
