And they flew...

Tuesday, Sept 14

Yesterday we had traveled south, today we went north. Our first stop was was at Bodie Island Lighthouse, built in 1872. This lighthouse still has its original 1st order Fresnel lens. They are currently rehabbing this lighthouse so it is surrounded by scaffolding.

Notice that this lighthouse has a different stripe pattern on it. This is how sailors tell where they are during the daytime.

After we finished visiting the lighthouse we drove up the road to Kill Devil Hills. This is where the Wright brothers completed the first manned powered airplane flight. Man had flown on gliders before but this was the first under power. The occurred on Dec 17, 1903. They completed 4 flights that day, with the last one being the longest at 852 feet. The first flight was 120 feet for 12 seconds. Number 2 was again 12 seconds but it was 175 feet. Flight 3 was 15 seconds and 200 feet.

We had visited this before with my parent about 20 years ago. Things have changed a bit since then. The monument on Kill Devil Hill, yes there is an actual hill, is still there. They have added some semi-permanent buildings that hold displays and a theatre. I can see why they picked this place to fly, it is really windy. There is a monument on top of Kill Devil Hill.

I finally got around to taking picture of the Sands of Time Campground. We are in site 30. This is a Passport America park. We would stay here again if we are in the area. Here are a couple of pictures.

The temperature today climbed to around 90 degrees. It was fine outside but a bit warm in the rig. The sun is on the side of our rig and heated things up. It will cool off as soon as the sun goes down.

Here are all the pictures we took today.
