Today we decided to tour a portion of the island and view some lighthouses. We are on Hatteras Island so headed over to the Cape Hatteras light.
It is the tallest lighthouse in the country at 208 feet. It was completed and lit in Dec 1870. Due to the eroding of the seashore it was built on, the lighthouse was moved in 1999 to its present location. It was moved in one piece in 23 days a total of 2,900 feet. It was an incredible feat. You can climb the 257 steps to the top but we didn't. You can still visit the spot where it stood before the move.
We stopped for lunch around 1:30. We are on an island but we didn't have seafood. We had deli sandwiches instead. We will be going out for fish one night this week.
The next lighthouse is Ocracoke lighthouse but it is also on the next island so we headed to the ferry. It was a trip of about 45 minutes. On the trip we saw some pelicans.
While we were enjoying the ride Bill looked down at the cars and took this picture for Terry to enjoy -
Once we were on the island we noticed a big difference between Hatteras and Orcacoke. Hatteras is pretty much populated on the entire island. On Ocracoke the houses and village are all located on the far end. We stopped to see the Ocracoke ponies. I took this picture of animals in the pens -
They don't look like ponies to me but like full grown horses. All I know is that the pens are suppose to hold the descendants of the original wild ponies from the island.
The Cape Hatteras light is in a big parking area with lots of signs pointing the way. On Ocracoke there is one little sign (which I missed the first time around) and a parking spot that will hold about 4 cars. The lighthouse actually sits on the backyard of a private house!
We got back to the rig around 6:30 PM. I had put a stew in the crockpot for dinner so it was ready when we got home.
I took a bunch of pictures. I hope you enjoy them.
