Flight 93

Tuesday, July 10, 2012

A common field one day.  A field of honor forever.

When we left York this morning we didn't realize that we would pass right by the field where Flight 93 crashed on September 11, 2001.  There is now a National Memorial to the brave people on this flight in the field.   Parts of this Memorial are completed and open to the public while other parts are still being worked on.  We saw the sign on US30 and then followed the road the 3 1/2 miles to the Memorial.  Currently there is a Wall of Names, and the walkway that signifies the flight path of the plane.  There is also a Visitor Shelter where an American Flag always flies at half-staff.  The Memorial is very well done.  You cannot walk into the field where the plane went down but there is a large boulder marking the final resting point of the flight.

When you leave the parking lot, walking toward the Memorial, you first encounter some signs describing the events of 9/11.

Then you walk down the pathway toward the Wall of Names -

There is one marble panels per crew member and passenger.  There is a gate that overlooks the field and through here you can see the boulder that marks the final resting place of these brave people.

Here is the Visitor's Shelter as we walked back toward the entrance.

This is a very well done Memorial and will be better when they have added the complete Visitor's Center, the Tower of Voices (which will have 40 wind chimes), the Field of Honor (with 40 memorial groves of trees) and the completed Flight Path Walkway.

Our drive into New Stanton, PA, which is just East of Pittsburgh, was easy most of the way but it was interesting when we passed through the Appalachian Mountains.  The road was a bit narrow, windy and twisty.  We make it with no problems.

When we arrived at the campground, we are staying at the Fox Den Acres Campground, we setup the rig and disconnected the car.  We were both hungry as we skipped lunch, so we headed out to Cracker Barrel to have dinner.  The food was good and I didn't find anything to buy this time.

Back at the rig we spent a quiet evening.  Tomorrow we head into Ohio.  Here are all the pictures I took today.
