The House on the Hill

Friday, July 29, 2012

We are in Wausau, WI to visit Lydia’s brother, Eddie, and his family.  Today he is taking us to the most famous attraction in the state called The House on the Rock.  We hoped it would be good as it was a 3 hour drive to get there.  We got to see a lot of the countryside on the drive and that was nice.  We still haven’t seen as many cows as there are suppose to be in this state.  Where does all the cheese  come from if there are no cows?
We we not expecting much when we got to the House.  I mean with a name like the House on the Rocks, you expect a house and a big rock that it is built on, right?  Well, we never actually saw the outside of the house.  We entered the Visitor’s Center and checked out everything there.  We went to stop at the ticket desk but Eddie said we didn’t have to as we already had tickets.  Remember this, it will appear later.

The house and surrounding buildings were built by a man named  Alex Jordon.  In the 1940’s he returned to this area where his family used to picnic.  He dreamed of creating a wonderful house where he could work on his art and be secluded from the rest of the world.  He build much of the original house himself, sometimes carrying supplies up 75 feet.    In the 1960’s he finally allowed tours of the house and decided to charge a fee.  Using the money he collected he added on to the house.  He also created many wondrous things and collected many others.  There are a total of 3 tours you can take and our ticket allowed us to take all three.
We walked into the start of the house tour.  The first thing you go into is the gardens.  There are many plants, flowers and a large Koi pond.

Next came a room that was used as the living room/den/entry area.  Here there were signs and posters explaining the life of Alex Jordon.   You saw examples of the things he created and things he collected.

It took about 45 minutes or so before we reached the start of tour 2, which was more of the house and into the Infinity Room.  There is a ticket taker here who asked to see our tickets.  Bill produced ours and was told he had to go back to the beginning (remember the ticket counter we walked right past?) and exchange our voucher for tickets!  Bill collected as many as he could so that everyone didn’t have to go but we couldn’t find Terry.  He had somehow gotten past this fellow and was already In that next portion of the house.  Bill returned and we joined Terry.  Alex Jordon built an infinity Room  that has no visible means of support.  As you walk further out you can feel the room moving.  There is also an opening in the floor so you can look down.  If you have a fear of heights you don’t really want to walk out here.

When we left this part of the tour Terry got stopped and finally had to walk all the way back to the front to get his ticket taken care of.  I am not going to be able to tell you everything in this house as there is just too much to see.  The World’s largest carousel is housed here, there are a number of music rooms where the instruments play themselves, there is art, collections of things like Faberge eggs , music boxes, scrimshaw, carved ivory, toys and just about anything else you can image.  I suggest you click on the slide show at the bottom of the post and look at all the pictures I took.  I am going to post a few now.

It took us about 4 ½ hours to do the entire tour.  Luckily, there are a couple of snack bars strategically placed throughout the house so you can get food.  We all took advantage of that.  By the time we finished the tour we were tired and overwhelmed.  If you are ever in the Spring Green portion of WI I suggest you stop here, but you may want to break the tour up into several days.
We drove the 3 hours back to Wausau and decided to go to dinner when we arrived home.  Eddie suggested we go to a Mexican restaurant that he knew.  The owner is from Whittier so he would cook like we are used to.  My chicken was a bit spicy (My lips were burning) but it was good.

We were soon back at our rigs and resting up for tomorrow.

Here is the slide show, all 106 pictures.  Remember to click on it to make the pictures bigger
