South Pass City

June 26, 2013 Tuesday

We decided to do a few things today.  One was to drive into Riverton and locate the Fairgrounds so we know where to go tomorrow.  It is about 30 miles and we will also put gas in the car and go to Walmart.

We located the fairgrounds fairly easily, only making 1 wrong turn.  We aren't sure exactly which entrance to use tomorrow but they both come off the same street.  The fairgrounds only has so many full hookup sites and we want to get one.  They are being assigned on a first come, first served basis.  Registration is suppose to open at 9:30 so we plan on being there at least an hour early.

After we returned to the rig and put the groceries away we headed out to visit South Pass City,  It is a ghost town, or old town, where they have preserved about 25 original buildings and furnished them.  I let Bill drive this time as I wanted to look for animals (which we only saw 1 antelope.)  The scenery was nice.

The road turned from blacktop to dirt but at least it was not too bumpy.  Soon we approached the Carissa Mine.  The mine was in operation from 1868 to the 1950's.  It was the main economic engine for the town,

South Pass City is the second oldest incorporated town in Wyoming.  It is also where the first woman to hold a judgeship in the world, lived.  Her name was Esther Morris.  In 1870 she served as Justice of the Peace for South Pass City.

It was really, really windy and bit on the cool side but we enjoyed the time we spent there. Here are all the pictures we took -

While we were there we ran into some people who were also going to the Samboree.  They planned on getting there early in the morning just like us.  Maybe we will have to get up earlier than I planned.  Back at the rig we had a light supper and packed stuff up in anticipation of tomorrow.  I hope you had a good day.
