Herbert Hoover Presidential Library

Thursday, Oct 9, 2014

After a good breakfast of biscuits and gravy we headed out to North Branch, IA to visit the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum.  It is a nice facility and we enjoyed it a lot.  I did learn many things about the 31st President.  He was born a Quaker and was an orphan at age 6.  He grew up under the care of an Aunt and Uncle in Oregon.  He attended Stanford and got a degree in Mining.  He worked all over the world for mining companies and made his fortune in the field.  He moved to public service by arranging relief for Belgium during WW1 and soon was helping with aid in many countries.  He told Coolidge to be careful of the stock speculation that was going on and had the misfortune of being President in 1929 when the market crashed.  He only served one term because of the depression.  He spent some years out of the public eye but was brought back to help with aid after the Missouri flood.  He is buried on a hillside overlooking his childhood home, along with his wife, Lou.

After visiting the library we stopped at Walmart to pick up a few things and got gas at the Costco that was nearby.  It was funny to see the Costco as their parking lot was an enclosed structure!  Gas was only $2.89, such a deal.

After we dropped the groceries off we headed into Amana to check out a couple of stores and to have dinner.  We ate at the Ox Yoke Inn.  The food was fine but I think next time we will pick the other restaurant.  Both specialize in German food and you can get it served family style.  We chose to be served a plated dinner.  We didn't need all that food but it would be fine for a larger group.

It rained last night but today was a pleasant day.  The sun came out in the afternoon and we enjoyed being outside.  That is all for now.  Tomorrow we move to Clear Lake.
