Friday and Saturday, Oct 10-11, 2014
Friday we traveled about 165 miles from Amana, IA to Clear Lake, IA. We are about 25 miles from Winnebago and will go there Sunday morning.
Friday we got situated, and that took awhile, and settled in. When I booked this site the picture didn't show the trees. We finally got a signal on the satellite after moving forward and back a couple of times. If we come back to Clear Lake State Park I would probably book site 100 since it has a better shot at satellite. Bill washed half the rig today and I did some laundry. When we get to Winnebago we will only have electricity so we had to fill the fresh water tank and make sure the other tanks are empty. It is chilly here but it hasn't got to freezing yet. I had our route planned taking I80 across but we may drop down to I40 due to weather so I had to make an alternate plan. I worked on that both days.
Saturday Bill washed another part of the rig and then we went on a road trip. Clear Lake, IA is where the Surf Ballroom is. This is the last place Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Richie Valens played before their plane crash. The crash site is in a corn field about 5 miles north of town. We decided to visit both places. The crash site is on private land but the farmer allows people to walk out to it. At the road is a marker that looks like Buddy Holly's glasses. It is about a quarter mile out to the crash site.
The Surf Ballroom is in town, across from the lake. Unfortunately it is only open for tours between Memorial Day and Labor Day or when a show is taking place. It was locked when we went there.
Bill worked on washing the rig the rest of the afternoon. I had put pork ribs in the crockpot in the morning so that is what we had for dinner. We will be eating out most of the time at Winnebago so I won't be cooking and dirtying dishes.
So that is all. I took a couple of pictures of the lake and the campground. There are a couple more of the crash site too. Enjoy.
