Homestead, FL Day 2

Homestead, FL

OK Dad, you can tell Mom that I went and visited the Coral Castle.  This is a place that one man, Ed Leedskainin, built with no help, and without modern equipment.  The story goes that nobody ever saw him work on it.  It just kinda appeared.  Well, the stores are wrong.  Yes, he worked at night, it was cooler than during the day!  He didn't have help except for one guy who trucked some things for him.  Many people thought he had help from aliens!  The truth is that he was a master stone mason and knew how to move and shape rocks.  He lived alone but built the castle to convince a girl in Latvia to come and marry him.  She never did.  It was cool to check out.

It is not as big as I thought it would be but it was impressive.

After that we drove down to Key Largo.  I wasn't impressed.  Just a bunch of hotels, restaurants and tourist shops.  We did stop at John Pennekamp State Park.  I have heard a lot about this park on RV.net and wanted to check it out.  Nice park.  Too bad we didn't have our swim suits with us.  We did stop and have a picnic lunch next to the water.

There is a coral reef around the park and you can scuba and snorkel there.  We couldn't go in the campground but did take a peek in the visitor's center.

Afterward we located a Post Office and then headed home.  Tomorrow - the Everglades.

Enjoy all the pictures of the castle -
