Chattanooga, TN Day 3

Tuesday, 8/25/2015
Chattanooga, TN

This morning we took a drive down to Georgia to the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Park.  There are two separate but connected Civil War battles that took place in the area.  Chattanooga was considered the "Gateway" to the South.  In mid-September 1863 the North held the city but the South held the surrounding area.  The fighting lasted for three days.  The North retreated to the city so you could call it a Southern victory.  This was the battle of Chickamauga.

In Nov of 1863 the North once again marched out of Chattanooga but this time they were successful.  The city becomes the supply and communication base for General Sherman and his march to the sea.
In 1890 the Congress authorized this Park as the first National Military Park in the country and served as a model for most national military and historical parks.  It is a large park and you could spend a number of days here.

We took the cell phone tour.  They provided a map of the driving tour.  As you reached each stop you called a phone number and entered the stop number.  You would then hear a description of the portion of the battle that took place there.  We started on the tour and quickly decided we needed to get a bite to eat before we got too far away from town.  We drove about a mile back to a Krystal.  This company makes mini hamburgers similar to White Castle.  They were good and once fortified we headed back to the tour.  About 2 hours later we finished and headed home.

I made a stir fry for dinner with veggies, chicken and shrimp served over rice.  It was good.

Here are the pictures I took on the battlefield.
